Even Real Estate Agents Can Learn to Relax
Feeling stressed, anxious, nervous or depressed? Let’s all take a deep breath together.
Do you know how to take a deep breath? My master coach, Susan McKay, taught me the benefits of deep breathing back in 2002. There’s a physiological thing that happens in our bodies when we get tensed up – we take more shallow breaths, which puts our bodies into a bit of oxygen deprivation, which causes our precious heart rates to speed up, which makes us feel more anxious… it’s a spiraling effect.
The bloodwork technician at The Children’s Hospital explained deep breathing to my 11-year-old son this way:
“Breathe in through your nose like you’re smelling flowers – really sniff ‘em hard because they smell so good.
Then blow out your mouth like you’re blowing out the candles on a birthday cake.”
The technician explained, that’s how they get kids to relax. Ever notice that the explanations given to children make the most sense and are the easiest to follow?
There’s plenty in the world to get tensed up about. At the end of the day, how much of it really, truly matters?
Take a deep breath. Relax. Flowers and cake. You can do it!
